Sindh Education Department has announced that the next academic session of 2025 will begin on April 1. As a result, the curriculum for the current session has been reduced by 25%. Starting from this academic year (2024), exams for grades 1 to 8, as well as the annual matriculation and intermediate exams, will be based on only 75% of the syllabus.
This decision comes as part of the shift in the academic year in Sindh from August 1 to April 1.
The Sindh Professors and Lecturers Association (SPLA), represented by President Professor Manzoor Abbas and General Secretary Ghulam Mustafa Kaka, expressed their astonishment over the subcommittee decisions of the steering committee. They criticized the decisions as impractical and out of touch with ground realities.
They highlighted that the decision-makers seemed unaware of when intermediate classes began, the state of the curriculum, and when it would be completed. The SPLA leaders emphasized that there is no need to reduce the intermediate syllabus since it is expected to be completed by the end of March.
Furthermore, the SPLA leaders stressed the importance of including stakeholders in decision-making processes to avoid such chaotic decisions.
Welcoming the decision to hold intermediate exams in April, SPLA leaders stated that it aligns with their longstanding demand to conduct exams in moderate weather instead of the intense summer heat.
These decisions were made during a meeting of the Sindh Education Department’s Steering Committee’s subcommittee, with formal proceedings released on December 5.
