On 15 August 2025, the Sindh government has announced a public holiday to all public and all the private educational institutions on the occasion of Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA). This ruling covers schools that fall under the administrative jurisdiction of School Education and Literacy Department throughout Sindh. However, 14th August 2025 is a public holiday across Pakistan for Independence day.
The closure was passed in a Sub-Committee meeting of the Steering Committee on November 28, 2025, as of the notification issued on August 8. This holiday will be observed in Karachi schools and other regions of Sindh, and orders are to be issued to all educational institutions.

Chehlum marks the 40th day after the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and follows Pakistan’s Independence Day on August 14, a nationwide public holiday. This forms a unique and long time off in Sindh with possible influence on the Karachi holidays and countrywide in Sindh holidays.
If other provinces announce similar holidays, parts of Pakistan could see an extended break. Meanwhile, the Punjab School Education Department has extended summer vacations until September 1, delaying reopening beyond August 14. Sindh schools have already reopened after summer break ended on July 31.
