Sindh Government Transitions from Urdu to English Medium Education System
In a significant move, the Sindh government, led by Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah in Karachi, has opted to phase out the Urdu medium education system and introduce English medium education across the province. This decision comes as a part of the government’s efforts to revamp the education system in Sindh.
A formal notification has issued by the Director of School Education in Karachi, with copies sent to various key figures, including the Minister of Education, Haleem Somro, and the Deputy Commissioner. This notification outlines the transformation of secondary and higher secondary education, which will now exclusively conducted in English medium schools. The new policy set to take effect from the upcoming academic session, commencing in 2024-25.
However, it’s important to note that students who prefer to continue their education in Urdu medium will still have the option to do so. This choice aimed at accommodating the diverse linguistic preferences of students in the region.
To ensure a smooth transition, all Teacher Association Officers, Principals, and Headmasters encouraged to request English medium textbooks for the upcoming academic session, which begins in 2024-25. This move signals a significant shift in Sindh’s educational landscape, with the government aiming to provide students with a broader range of educational opportunities and improve the overall quality of education in the province.
