Winter Vacation Extended: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Schools to Reopen on January 7

The Education Department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) has announced a significant extension of winter vacations across the province, citing the ongoing severe cold wave. Schools in KP will now reopen on January 7 instead of the previously announced date, January 1.

Why Was the Winter Vacation Extended?

A notification was issued detailing the rationale behind the decision. The biting cold has pushed mercury levels further down, raising serious health concerns for students, especially those who must brave freezing conditions during early morning commutes. Originally, KP authorities had declared winter vacations from December 22 to December 31 for plain areas, while schools in hilly regions remain closed until February 28.

Punjab’s Approach to Winter Vacations

Meanwhile, Punjab has also adjusted its schedule, granting 20 days of winter vacation for public and private schools from December 20, 2024, to January 10, 2025. Secretary of Schools Punjab, Khalid Nazir Wattoo, confirmed the closure. Additionally, the Lahore High Court (LHC) has taken a proactive approach against smog, directing schools to provide pick-and-drop services to students after the holidays.

Harsh Weather Impacts Education

This decision to extend the winter vacation reflects the growing challenges posed by extreme weather. With temperatures plummeting across KP, the priority remains ensuring the safety and well-being of students.

Stay tuned for more updates on winter vacation policies as authorities navigate the complexities of weather and environmental concerns.
