Pakistani Folk Singer Mai Dhai Shines on New York’s Times Square Billboard

Singing sensation Mai Dhai, originally hailing from Thar, has also found her way on the billboards of New York’s Times Square. Her voice (which has often been likened to that of a nightingale) caught the ear of the global music community.

Spotify, apart from that, recently held up Mai Dhai by sharing a photo on their Instagram, featuring the typical Times Square office shot of her with that shining orb behind her. They captioned the post, “A nightingale voice straight to Times Square,” in addition to a green heart emoji. Spotify noted that her beautiful tracks are part of “EQUAL Pakistan,” which features women in music.

For June, the ambassador for Spotify EQUAL Pakistan is Mai Dhai. For the 80-year-old vocalist, this recognition is a major achievement. Mai Dhai makes history by becoming not just the first regional ambassador of EQUAL Pakistan but also the first artist of 2024 to be featured on one of Times Square’s giant screens.

Stories like Mai Dhai’s are inspiring, showcasing how a folk singer from the desert lands of Tharparkar is applauded along the bustling streets of New York. Growing up, she sang in her mother tongue of Sindh, and now her voice has transcended borders and languages to be etched on one of the world’s most iconic landmarks.
