DreamWorks Animation has officially greenlit the production of “Shrek 5,” bringing back fan-favorite stars Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz to reprise their iconic roles. Directed by Walt Dohrn and slated for release on July 1, 2026, this announcement marks a highly anticipated return to the beloved animated franchise.
Producing the film are Gina Shay alongside Chris Meledandri, founder of Illumination, with Brad Ableson joining as co-director. Eddie Murphy recently shared his involvement, revealing that he has already begun recording his part, emphasizing the excitement surrounding the project.
The “Shrek” series began in 2001, grossing a staggering $487 million globally with its debut film, which also won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Subsequent sequels, notably “Shrek 2,” soared to even greater success, earning $928 million worldwide. Despite varying critical reception, both “Shrek the Third” and “Shrek Forever After” continued to captivate audiences, amassing $813 million and $752 million respectively.
While the return of Myers, Murphy, and Diaz promises a nostalgic reunion for fans, the participation of Antonio Banderas as Puss in Boots remains uncertain for “Shrek 5.” DreamWorks Animation looks forward to continuing the saga of everyone’s favorite ogre and his whimsical adventures.
