Babusar flooding caused by heavy rains and cloudburst has resulted in the death of five tourists and emergency conditions in Gilgit-Baltistan’s Diamer district. The incident occurred in and around Babusar Top, where flash floods and landslides blocked key routes and damaged infrastructure.
According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), cloudbursts led to flash floods that blocked roads at over 14 points. A 7 to 8 km stretch of road at Thak, below Babusar Top, destroyed. Bodies of five individuals swept away in the floods have been recovered. Multiple tourists remain missing.
The spokesperson of the Gilgit-Baltistan government confirmed that over 15 vehicles carried away by the floodwaters. Rescue operations are underway, and machinery dispatched to affected sites. Injured individuals moved to local hospitals.
Deputy Commissioner of Diamer stated that several key roads remain closed, including the Karakoram Highway, Lal Pahari, Tatta Pani, and Sadpara Road leading to Deosai. In Thak Nala, Chilas, three people including one woman died after caught in flood currents.
The Gilgit- Baltistan government spokesman confirmed the loss of more than 15 vehicles to the floodwaters. Rescue squads are working, sending machinery to the places of impact. People injured have been transferred to local hospitals.
The NDMA and Gilgit-Baltistan authorities have initiated the distribution of relief items, ration packs, and tents in affected regions. Citizens and tourists are strictly advised to avoid non-essential travel to Babusar Top and nearby flood-hit zones.
