Newlywed bride from Lyari dies in hospital 20 days after alleged domestic and sexual violence by her husband, triggering legal action and ministerial response.
A 19-year-old woman named Shanti, allegedly subjected to severe domestic and sexual violence by her husband in Lyari’s Shah Baig Lane, passed away at the Civil Hospital Trauma Centre. According to Baghdadi Police, Shanti had been in a coma since June 17 after sustaining serious injuries. She was married to Ashok on June 15.

The incident, involving brutal physical assault and alleged sexual violence, led to her hospitalization on July 4, when her brother brought her to Civil Hospital’s Trauma Centre and registered an FIR. Shanti underwent three major surgeries but could not recover. She died during treatment.
Karachi police confirmed that the accused husband, Ashok, has been arrested and remains in jail. Initial reports indicate that the victim’s body had signs of physical mutilation. She was initially taken to Uncle Saria Hospital by her in-laws and later returned home without proper treatment.
Sindh’s Provincial Minister for Women Development, Shahina Sher Ali, expressed her condolences and called the incident highly condemnable. She visited the hospital and instructed medical staff to ensure full treatment. She also directed the department to oversee the funeral arrangements and assured full legal support to the victim’s family.
