Lyari building collapse in Karachi’s Baghdadi area has left 19 dead and 11 injured so far. The rescue operation entered its 2nd day but remains incomplete. Fears persist that more people may still be trapped under the debris.

Rescue officials told “Hamariweb.com”, the basement of the collapsed five-storey building has been cleared. Work on the remaining structure is ongoing. Rescue teams and machinery have been on-site since morning. The delay in private heavy machinery slowed down the relief work.

Among the deceased in the Lyari building collapse are 8 men and 9 women, 3 of them, including a female victim, remain unidentified. Names of those who lost their lives include Prem, Waseem, Daya Lal, Kishan, Ayush, Kailash, Prakash, Jatin, Hoor Bai, Usha, Shani, Fatima, Parineeti, Sangeeta, Archana, and Vandala.

Deputy Commissioner South Karachi Javed Khoso confirmed that the building was declared dangerous in 2022. Residents received notices and public warnings, including a formal announcement on June 2. The building was one of 21 structures marked as hazardous in the area. Fourteen of these have been vacated to date.

Authorities recently acted against illegal construction in Lyari. The Lyari building collapse has raised questions on the enforcement and effectiveness of these measures. Officials have assured legal action against those responsible.
