On Thursday, traders in the Lower Wana Bazaar of South Waziristan observed a complete shutter-down strike to ensure that the law and order situation returns in the region.
Stores closed after traders and local community members protested over the recent cases of insecurity like ransom kidnapping, targeted killings, and extortion. The protestors demanded the government to immediately make efforts to bring peace to South Waziristan and to reopen the Angoor Adda border gate that was closed 23 months back cutting off the cross-border trade.
The protest was also joined by political and social leaders. Speakers raised the issue of worsening security situation and stated that a continued lack of stability has impacted the business operations and created fear among residents.
They added that while trade is suspended, the public continues to feel unsafe. Protesters called on the government, civil administration, and police to fulfill their constitutional responsibilities and ensure protection of life and property. They emphasized that maintaining public safety is the state’s primary duty.
