1st Muharram: Shahadat Hazrat Umar Farooq (R.A) Observed in Pakistan

Pakistan observes 1st Muharram, Shahadat Hazrat Umar Farooq, marking the martyrdom anniversary of Hazrat Umar ibn al-Khattab (R.A.), the second Caliph of Islam. This day, coinciding with the Islamic New Year 1447 AH, holds significance for Muslims, particularly in Pakistan, where Khyber Pakhtunkhwa declares 1st Muharram public holiday in the province.

Hazrat Umar (R.A.), born around 584 CE in Mecca, converted to Islam in 616 CE, strengthening the Muslim community. As Caliph from 634 to 644 CE, he expanded the Islamic empire, including Persia, Syria, and Egypt, and introduced the Hijri calendar. Known as Al-Farooq, he established a welfare state, ensuring justice and public welfare. His governance included stipends for the poor and allowing Jews to worship in Jerusalem.

Hazrat Umar (R.A.) was martyred in Medina’s Prophet’s Mosque during Fajr prayer, stabbed by Abu Lulu Feroz. Pakistan commemorates this on 1st Muharram with religious gatherings, seminars, and processions by organizations like Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat. Media, broadcasts programs on his legacy, while social media posts highlight his justice and courage.
