The Moon Sighting Committee of Canada has called on Muslims across the country to participate in the sighting of the Muharram moon on the evening of Friday, 5th July 2024. This effort is crucial as it marks the 29th Dhū al-Hijjah 1445 and will determine the beginning of the new Islamic year, 1446 AH.
Significance of Muharram Moon Sighting
The sighting of the Muharram moon is a pivotal event for Muslims, marking the start of the first month of the Islamic calendar. Muharram is one of the four sacred months in Islam, and its commencement is a time for reflection, prayer, and observance. The 10th day of Muharram, known as Ashura, holds particular significance, commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions in the Battle of Karbala.
