Islamabad: The Ministry of Religious Affairs has proposed the introduction of Hajj travel by sea to reduce costs, provided an agreement is reached with Saudi Arabia for ship transportation. This initiative aims to provide a more economical option for pilgrims traveling from Pakistan.
Hajj by Ship: A Cost-Effective Solution
A meeting of the Standing Committee on Religious Affairs of the National Assembly, chaired by Malik Amir Dogar, discussed multiple issues related to Hajj, including the selection of assistants and the possibility of travel by sea. Members emphasized that introducing Hajj travel by ship could significantly lower expenses, making pilgrimage more accessible for a larger number of Pakistanis.
Conditions for Hajj by Sea
Additional Secretary Dr. Attaur Rahman noted that there is currently no operational ship service between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. However, if an agreement is finalized between the two governments, the Ministry of Religious Affairs will ensure all necessary arrangements and facilities for pilgrims traveling by sea.
Hajj Assistants and Their Role
The committee also deliberated on the selection of Hajj assistants, highlighting the requirement that assistants should be below 50 years of age and physically capable of assisting pilgrims. They must possess significant experience in handling the demands of the pilgrimage. Additionally, an equivalent security deposit would be required for those serving as assistants.
Hajj by Road: Visa and NOC Requirements
The meeting also addressed the possibility of Hajj by road under the private Hajj scheme. It was stated that pilgrims opting for this mode of travel would need visas for all transit countries. Additionally, an NOC (No Objection Certificate) would be issued to those traveling by road.
Future Prospects for Hajj Travel by Ship
Committee members expressed optimism that Hajj by ship from Pakistan could soon become a reality if both governments collaborate on launching a maritime route. This step would provide an affordable Hajj package for thousands of pilgrims who find air travel expensive.
