As the Ramadan Calendar 2024 USA turned its page to the holy month, Times Square in New York City witnessed a unique gathering. Dozens of Muslim worshippers assembled to mark the start of Ramadan, performing Taraweeh, the special night prayers of the holy month, under the glow of the iconic LED billboards.
Despite the cold, windy conditions, the faithful count exceeded a hundred. The air was filled with the melodious chanting of Nasheeds, and the recitation of the Qur’an by children. Copies of the Qur’an were offered to both Muslims and interested passersby.

Observant Muslims refrain from eating and drinking from dawn to dusk during Ramadan, gathering with family and friends to break the fast in the evening. It is also a month of prayers, with Muslims traditionally converging in large numbers at mosques, especially at night.
In a unique display, organizers projected prayers from the Qur’an onto a white sheet, buffeted by the wind, creating a stark contrast against the backdrop of giant ads for Broadway musicals and candy. This Taraweeh in Times Square 2024 marked a memorable start to Ramadan, reflecting the vibrant diversity and unity of the Muslim community in the heart of New York City.
