The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah in Saudi Arabia has made a significant move towards gender equality by launching a new system that allows female Saudi residents to apply for hajj permits without the need for a mahram. This decision has been welcomed by women across the country who have been advocating for the right to perform hajj independently.
The updated process enables women to apply online by selecting the appropriate application category and deciding on their chosen companionship. If a foreign citizen living in the country wishes to apply for a hajj permit, they should contact the Passport Department.
The Ministry has also announced that the issuance of Hajj Permit 1444 AH will begin on 15 Shawwal, 5 May 2023. However, in order to obtain a hajj permit, applicants must receive the recommended vaccinations. The Ministry has emphasized that the Hajj visa will only be granted once the applicant has received the vaccination, which must be administered no later than 10 days before the Hajj season starts.
This move by the Saudi government is a significant step towards gender equality and is expected to empower women across the country to fulfill their religious duties without the need for a male guardian. It also aligns with the country’s Vision 2030 plan to promote social and economic reforms and create a more inclusive society.
