In Swat, 14 year 14-year-old madrasa student beaten to death by some teachers in Khwazakhela. The student, named Farhan, was beaten for absenteeism in the Chaliyar region. Initial police reports indicate that rods were used by teachers during attack and the boy was locked up in a room. He was then transferred to Khwazakhela hospital where he was declared dead. The body was submitted to post-mortem examination.
Swat police had filed an FIR against three teachers: Muhammad Umar, his son Ehsanullah, and Abdullah who was another teacher. Abdullah is one of the suspects who have been arrested. The rest two suspects are pursued and attempts are underway to arrest them. Police have mobilized an official investigation and started off raids in the vicinities.
Farhan is said to have come out of a low income family and he was in the madrassa to get religious training. The case has raised concern among the population concerning the practice of physical punishment in religious schools. The civil society and legal professionals have insisted on accountability and execution of child protection laws.
