The federal government has officially declared November 9, 2024, as a public holiday to honor the birth anniversary of the legendary poet and philosopher Allama Muhammad Iqbal. This announcement was made through a notification issued by the Cabinet Division, confirming that the day would be observed nationwide.
As per the government’s notification, Iqbal Day will be celebrated on Saturday, November 9, 2024, marking the 147th birth anniversary of Allama Iqbal, widely known as the “Poet of the East” and the “Conceiver of Pakistan.” This day holds immense significance for Pakistanis, who remember Iqbal’s contributions to the nation’s cultural and political thought.
In line with the public holiday announcement, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has also declared a holiday on the same date. As per SBP’s notice, all banks, Development Finance Institutions (DFIs), and Micro Finance Banks (MFBs) will remain closed on November 9, 2024 to observe the day.
It is worth noting that Iqbal Day was briefly suspended in 2015 but was reinstated in 2022, bringing back the celebration of this important national day. Last year, the Cabinet Division had declared Iqbal Day a public holiday, and this year, the official 2024 holiday list has ensured the observance continues.
Traditionally, educational institutions across the country host events where students recite Iqbal’s poetry and reflect on his lasting impact on Pakistan’s heritage. In addition, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that all its missions worldwide will observe the holiday as well.
Iqbal Day, though briefly interrupted, remains a key occasion for Pakistanis to honor the life and legacy of their national poet.
