In a fresh update that’s catching students’ attention across Pakistan, the School Education Department (SED) has laid out plans for celebrating Iqbal Day on November 9, 2024. Instead of a holiday, students and staff are being urged to honor the “Poet of the East,” Allama Iqbal, with various engaging events across government and private schools.
A recent circular from the Punjab School Education Department has directed schools to mark the day with fervor. This means that classrooms won’t stay quiet but will be alive with tributes to Iqbal’s legacy, aiming to make his philosophy more relatable to young minds.
Schools, particularly in Lahore and nearby areas, are encouraged to host poetry recitation events. It’s an opportunity for students to dive deep into Iqbal’s powerful verses, and the SED also suggested Speech and Essay Competitions focusing on Iqbal’s philosophy of Khudi (selfhood) and his influential role in Pakistan’s creation. To add a creative flair, schools are urged to display student artwork inspired by Iqbal’s poetry, giving students a platform to express their take on his vision.
As for November 9, there’s a strong chance it may be declared a holiday, especially in Punjab’s capital, Lahore. Local authorities are considering an extended three-day weekend due to severe smog that’s affecting many residents’ health. This potential break would not only honor Iqbal’s legacy but also provide relief from the toxic air, allowing students and staff a chance to stay indoors amid the ongoing smog situation.
