Above-Normal Rain Expected in Karachi: Sindh Government Issues High Alert

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecasted above-normal monsoon rainfall in 2025, predicting a 10% increase in Upper Sindh and up to 30% more rain in Southern Sindh. Karachi lacks the infrastructure to handle rainfall exceeding 45mm per hour.

This was disclosed in a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah to review province-wide monsoon preparations. The Meteorological Department reported that a low-pressure system is forming earlier than usual in southern Pakistan, indicating the possibility of higher-than-normal rainfall in July and August.

The forecast highlights a 20–30% increase in rainfall in Southern Sindh and a 10% increase in Upper Sindh. Lower Sindh regions may face urban flooding due to the overflow of the Indus River and hill torrents.

Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah instructed all relevant departments to finalize a joint emergency strategy, ensure the cleaning of stormwater drains, inspect pumping stations, and keep rescue teams ready.

The drain-cleaning operation began on June 20 and will continue until September 15.
