In a pioneering move toward enhanced road safety, the Punjab Safe Cities Authority set to launch cutting-edge software designed to monitor and penalize motorcycle riders neglecting to wear helmets. The Punjab police, committed to upholding traffic regulations, are leveraging state-of-the-art artificial intelligence technology to enforce adherence to safety measures.
Operationalized through CCTV cameras managed by the Punjab Safe Cities Authority, the newly developed software programmed to identify motorcyclists without helmets automatically. Offenders will face a fine of Rs 2,000 as a consequence of this comprehensive initiative.
Expressing optimism, IG Dr Usman Anwar anticipates a heightened sense of responsibility among citizens towards traffic rules. The use of technology for identification and the subsequent imposition of fines on helmet-less riders expected to be a game-changer in promoting road safety.
This innovative step follows a previous crackdown by Punjab traffic police on helmet-less motorcyclists. Initiated after a high-level meeting at the Central Police Office (CPO), the provincial police chief mandated strict adherence to helmet usage by every motorcyclist traversing the province’s roads.
The crackdown prompted by alarming statistics revealing a significant number of head and neck injuries among motorcyclists involved in road accidents while not wearing helmets. In the previous year, out of a total of 92,784 road accidents in the provincial capital, a staggering 74% involved motorbikes, amounting to 67,292 incidents.
The Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) emphasized the urgency by deploying 190 checkpoints in the city. Dedicated traffic wardens at these checkpoints penalize motorcyclists violating helmet regulations. In the last six months, over 800,000 riders were fined for not complying with helmet safety standards.
The Punjab Safe Cities Authority uses technology for traffic safety. The advanced software will transform the region’s road culture, creating a safer environment for commuters.
