In a recent turn of events, Maryam Nawaz, the Chief Minister of Punjab and a prominent figure in the ruling Pakistan Muslim League (N), was invited to be the chief guest at an event at Aitchison College in Lahore. This decision, however, was met with widespread disapproval, leading to a flood of protest emails and vocal opposition.
The opposition was primarily from parents and alumni of the esteemed institution, who collectively sent close to 1,000 emails requesting her to refrain from attending the event. The underlying sentiment was clear – they did not want someone they perceived as dishonest to be the chief guest at such a prestigious event.
Adding to the tension, many supporters of the incarcerated Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader, Imran Khan, voiced their support for him through slogans. Khan, known as prisoner number 804 in Adiala Jail, has recently been the victim of an attack by three Afghanis, as reported by CTD Punjab.
Similar slogans backing Khan were also heard at the opening of the Premier Match of PSL 9.
Despite the initial invitation for the founder’s day at Aitchison College on March 8th, the mounting pressure led to Nawaz being asked to step down. The college management received warnings from parents and anonymous letters from Aitchisonians.
Nawaz, who made history as the first woman to hold a Chief Minister position in any Pakistani province, acknowledged the challenges she faced in carving out a space for herself in the PML-N, a party established by her father, Nawaz Sharif.
