The Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) has issued a new notice, that people owning 120 sq-yards cannot build more than one floor over their ground floor, spreading the notices to all the builders around the city, specifically for plots located in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulberg, Liaquatabad, Jamshed Town and Nazimabad.
How poor people are the most who get affected
Usually the poor people afford 120 sq-yards plots because that is the only sized plot in their budgets. As their families grow in size they build more floors to welcome new family members. However last year the SBCA issued an order that banned builders from building two storeys over the ground floor. With increasing population, the city seems to be running out of space for building new buildings so the only solution is to build more floors above.
This ban however seems temporary as SBCA’s structure engineer said even though they have stopped the builders from working on more than one floor; they will provide relaxation on these orders soon. The SBCA has issued such orders for trying to control the electricity, sewage and water infrastructural strain on the city of Karachi.
