Chaukhandi Graveyard to Transform into Archaeological Park

In a bid to preserve and revitalize the historical Chaukhandi Graveyard, Caretaker Sindh Chief Minister Justice Maqbool Baqar has called for proposals to establish an Archaeological Park on the site. During his recent visit to the Chaukhandi Graveyard, he witnessed the deteriorating condition of stone-carved graves and tombs, prompting urgent restoration efforts.

The Chief Minister, accompanied by key officials including Secretary Local Government Manzoor Shaikh, Secretary Culture Aleem Lashari, and others, emphasized the need to address encroachments and illegal structures surrounding the graveyard. Secretary Culture Aleem Lashari informed the Chief Minister that, following the 18th amendment, the administrative control of the graveyard transferred to the Sindh government in April 2013.

The Chaukhandi Graveyard, spanning 100 acres, holds the tombs of Baloch and Jokhio warriors from the 17th and 18th centuries A.D. Designated as a ‘Protected’ area and listed on UNESCO’s tentative list since 1993, the site requires immediate attention for restoration.

To combat illegal activities in the vicinity, the Chief Minister directed the removal of encroachments and the organization of a fundraising musical evening at the site. He specifically instructed Commissioner Karachi to address illegal parking of heavy trucks near the main entrance and prohibited dumping within the premises.

In a visionary move, Justice Maqbool Baqar proposed the transformation of Chaukhandi Graveyard into an Archaeological Park, promoting local and international tourism. A committee, led by Secretary Culture Kaleem Lashari, has formed to suggest ways for the upliftment of the graveyard and the development of archaeological landscapes.

The Chief Minister emphasized the importance of tree plantation and greenery, tasking the horticulture departments of KMC and KDA to collaborate with Dr Kaleem Lashari. The goal is to create a park-like atmosphere, inviting schoolchildren and visitors to enjoy the rich archaeological heritage of the area.

Justice Maqbool Baqar urged the committee to submit a proposal promptly, expressing his desire to expedite the transformation of Chaukhandi Graveyard into a vibrant Archaeological Park. With these initiatives, the historic site poised for a new chapter, attracting both local and international enthusiasts to explore its cultural and historical significance.
