Punjab’s ambitious Cholistan Green Project (GPI), aimed at transforming barren lands into fertile agricultural zones inaugurated on Saturday by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Gen Asim Munir. This initiative promises a revolution in Punjab’s agriculture sector, focusing on irrigation, modern farming techniques, and increased crop yield.
Features of Cholistan Green Project
The project includes the Green Agri Mall, a one-stop solution for farmers, offering high-quality seeds, fertilisers, pesticides, and machinery at subsidised rates. It will also provide modern farming equipment like tractors and drones for rent. Additionally, a 5,000-acre Smart Agri Farm will establish using a High Efficiency Irrigation System for maximum crop yield. The Agri Research and Facilitation Centre will offer soil testing and technical support to improve agricultural practices.
Maryam Nawaz emphasized that agriculture is the “lifeline of Pakistan”, highlighting the importance of the Green Pakistan Initiative in introducing modern farming practices. Farmers in Cholistan will have access to essential agricultural inputs at government-regulated prices, along with modern machinery rental services.
The Punjab government is not alone in this effort. Federal and army institutions are collaborating to ensure the success of the project. The provincial agriculture minister stressed the need for cooperative farming to tackle food security challenges, while also focusing on genetically resilient seeds, climate-adaptive farming, and efficient irrigation systems.
