Dedicated Ambulance Lane in Karachi Introduced in Saddar

Karachi has introduced its first dedicated ambulance lane in Karachi on Mansfield Street, Saddar. The “special corridor” is designed to give emergency vehicles uninterrupted access through congested areas.

How the ambulance lane in Karachi was made possible

Authorities cleared illegal structures and obstacles during a recent anti-encroachment operation. These blockages had delayed ambulances in busy commercial zones. Deputy Commissioner Javed Nabi Khoso said the main goal is faster response times and smoother emergency access.

Like Karachi, similarly planned ambulance lanes will be set up on the major roads within District South. The program aims at upgrading emergency response systems and the priority of the citizens.

The ambulances are usually slowed down by heavy traffic in places such as Saddar. Special lanes ensure a clear way that can easily save some important minutes. Removing encroachments is also a way of reclaiming the space that belongs to the population and could enhance general traffic movement. Decreased response time enhances the possibility of medical attention, which is timely.

There is no clarity on the number of additional roads that will get ambulance lanes or the selection criteria. Methods of enforcement and physical demarcation are not reported. The cooperation of the people will also play a key role. Real-life impact information, e.g. the improvement of response time or saved lives is yet to be received.
