Disabled Resident of Pindi to Sell Organs to Pay Electricity Bill

In a heart-wrenching plea, a disabled resident of Pindi Esa, near Jaranwala, has announced his intention to sell his eyes, heart, and kidneys to pay his electricity bill. Yaseen, who has been living with a disability for five years, expressed his frustration in a widely circulated video on social media, highlighting his dire financial situation and his inability to cover basic living expenses.

Emotional Appeal for Government Intervention

Yaseen’s emotional appeal has resonated with many, urging the government to intervene and provide the necessary support. He called on the provincial authorities to fulfill their promise of providing free electricity to poor and needy families, a commitment that seems increasingly vital given the current economic climate.

“I have no other option left,” Yaseen stated in the video. Force to sell my organs to pay my electricity bill. I hope the government listens to my plea and helps those in need.”

NEPRA’s New Fixed Charges and Their Impact

From July 1, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has implemented fixed charges for domestic consumers, exempting those using up to 200 units. However, for users consuming between 301 and 400 units, a monthly charge of Rs. 200 will imposed. Those consuming between 401 and 500 units will face a charge of Rs. 400, and the charge progressively increases to Rs. 1000 for users consuming over 700 units.

The purpose of these fixed charges is to boost the revenue of the electricity distribution companies (Discos). While this move may be financially beneficial for the Discos, it places additional financial burdens on many households, particularly those already struggling to make ends meet.

Urgent Need for Policy Reforms

Yaseen’s situation underscores the urgent need for policy reforms to protect the most vulnerable members of society. As energy costs rise, it is crucial for the government to implement measures that alleviate the financial strain on low-income families, ensuring they have access to essential services without having to resort to desperate measures.
