On Thursday, July 31, 2025, a man in Karachi at Do Darya seaside allegedly threw out two children into the sea and then also followed them after jumping in. The accident happened at about 3:00 PM and reported with the help of Madadgar-15 helpline.
Police, Edhi Foundation volunteers, lifeguards, and Pakistan Navy personnel began a coordinated rescue operation. Rescue operations halted after sunset due to poor visibility and resumed early Friday morning after Fajr prayers. As of August 1, the body of one child, a seven-year-old boy wearing a shirt and pants, has been recovered.
Eyewitness reported seeing the man, approximately 35–40 years old, dressed in a black shalwar kameez, running toward the rocks while shouting “pani, pani” before jumping into the sea with a boy and a girl. Witnesses claimed the man appeared under the influence of drugs. Despite efforts by bystanders, they were unable to intervene in time.
South-SSP Mahzoor Ali and DIG South Syed Asad Raza said investigations are underway, and no motive has yet been established. Authorities have not ruled out suicide or substance use as possible causes.
Chief Minister of Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah has directed a full investigation. There are talks of erecting safety guards along the coastal areas of Karachi including Do Darya and Sea View where some incidences had taken place in the past.
Such cases in the past include the case in 2019 of a woman drowning her daughter at Do Darya, and in 2023, the body of a woman was found and confirmed to be murdered. These incidents have cast a doubt on the safety of citizens and mental health provision within the coastal regions of Karachi.
