Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced a 10-day extension for electricity bill payments, providing much-needed relief for consumers. The Power Division has directed all electricity distribution companies to implement this extension for July and August 2024 bills.
The decision comes in response to the hardships faced by consumers, who are struggling with high electricity tariffs and alleged overbilling by distribution companies. This extension aims to ease the financial burden on the public.
Jamaat e Islami Protest
Jamaat-i-Islami has been actively protesting against the inflated electricity bills, highlighting the widespread discontent among consumers. Adding to the controversy, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has confirmed overbilling by all power distribution companies, including K-Electric, for April and June 2024.
In response, Nepra issued showcause notices to the companies, demanding explanations and corrective actions. An official report compiled by Nepra officers revealed that all distribution companies, including K-Electric, were involved in overbilling during the specified period.
