Electricity Prices Increased by Rs3.76 Per Unit

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has announced a significant hike in electricity prices, raising rates by Rs3.76 per unit due to the quarterly fuel cost adjustment. This increase is set to place an additional burden of Rs46.61 billion on consumers who are already grappling with high electricity costs.

The additional charges will be spread across the next three months—June, July, and August. Specifically, Rs1.90 per unit will be recovered in June, followed by 93 paisas per unit in both July and August. This adjustment marks the third quarterly review that has resulted in a tariff increase.

Impact on Consumers

The decision by Nepra comes at a time when electricity consumers are already facing exorbitant prices. This latest increase will further strain household and business budgets, adding to the financial challenges faced by many due to rising living costs.

Relief in Fuel Prices

In contrast to the electricity price hike, the federal government has announced a reduction in petrol and diesel prices, marking the third consecutive cut in fortnightly reviews. The price of petrol has been reduced by Rs4.74 per litre, bringing it down to Rs268.36 per litre from the previous Rs273.10 per litre. Similarly, high-speed diesel prices have been cut by Rs3.86 per litre, now priced at Rs270.22 per litre, down from Rs274.08 per litre.

While the reduction in fuel prices offers some relief to consumers, the significant increase in electricity tariffs due to the quarterly fuel cost adjustment by Nepra highlights the ongoing financial pressures faced by the public. As the adjustments take effect over the summer months, consumers will need to brace for higher electricity bills alongside marginally lower fuel costs.
