Encroachments in Saddar: Grand Operation to Start Today in Karachi

A grand operation against encroachments in Saddar area of Karachi is set to commence today.

Encroachments in Saddar are still present at various spots, where, earlier, a court had ordered the Karachi mayor to have them removed in two weeks.

Back in May 2018, a similar operation was carried out; however, the encroachments in Saddar have remained in place.

A bench headed by Justice Saqib Nisar, the chief justice of Pakistan, on October 27, had heard a case against land mafia in Karachi at the Supreme Court’s Karachi registry.

During the hearing, attended by Karachi Mayor Waseem Akhtar and Ameer Sheikh, the additional inspector-general of police (AIG) for Karachi, Justice Saqib Nisar had asked IG Karachi if he was going to remove the illegal encroachments in Saddar.

Chief Justice of Pakistan asked, “Will you tell us your plan regarding the removal of illegal encroachments in the city?” Answering to that Ameer Sheikh said: “We are ready to cooperate.”

Mayor Karachi had told the court that more than 70 percent of the Empress Market had been cleared.

To this, the CJP had remarked that areas around Empress Market also need to be cleared. “You do not need permission from anyone else, the court has given you the order.”

Assuring the court, Mayor Waseem Akhtar had said: “We will completely clear out Saddar.”
