A significant reduction in electricity prices is anticipated, with a decrease of 70 paise per unit likely to take effect for one month. The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has formally submitted a request to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) for this reduction under the monthly fuel adjustment mechanism for September.
Hearing Scheduled for October 30
NEPRA is set to hold a hearing on the CPPA’s request on October 30. The agency’s application outlines that the most expensive electricity in September was generated from furnace oil, costing Rs. 30.29 per unit. In contrast, electricity produced from Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) was priced at Rs. 24.95 per unit.
Production Breakdown
The CPPA’s request indicates that 30.75% of the electricity generated in September came from water sources. Additionally, electricity produced from local coal constituted 10.10%, while imported coal accounted for 9.20% of total electricity production during the month.
This expected price reduction is aimed at providing some relief to consumers amidst rising energy costs. Stakeholders and consumers alike await the outcome of NEPRA’s hearing, which will determine the final decision on the proposed tariff adjustments.
