The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has blocked around 3500 mobile SIMs and is set to block an additional 500,000 SIMs of non-filers, as part of its efforts to crack down on tax evasion. The move comes after the FBR issued an order last month to disable mobile phone SIMs of individuals who are liable to file income tax returns but have not done so.
Who’s Affected?
The FBR has identified individuals who are not on the active taxpayer list but are eligible to file returns. These individuals have been served notices, and their SIMs will be blocked if they fail to comply.
How to Check If You’re on the List
To check if your SIM is at risk of being blocked, follow these steps:
- Visit the FBR website
- Click Ctrl+F
- Enter your full name or CNIC number
- If your name appears on the list, take immediate action to file your tax returns and avoid SIM blockage
Telecom Operators Push Back
Telecom operators have refused to comply with the FBR’s request, citing concerns over the impact on their investments. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has also stressed the need for a balanced approach that protects both the FBR’s objectives and the interests of telecom operators.
