The Islamabad High Court has seen the withdrawal of a petition concerning the pricing of traditional bread items, naan and roti. The court was informed about the revised prices by the district administration and public prosecutor.
The new pricing structure reveals that in Islamabad’s urban areas, roti will now cost Rs18, and naan will be priced at Rs22. However, in the rural regions, these items will be available at slightly lower rates, with roti and naan priced at Rs16 and Rs20 respectively.
The Naanbai Association’s legal representative shared with the court that the new prices were agreed upon following discussions with the district administration, which were initiated based on the court’s order.
Justice Tariq Mahmood Jahangiri welcomed the determination of the new agreed prices. Following the withdrawal of the case, the court ordered the immediate release of all detained individuals and the unsealing of sealed tandoors.
Previously, the Islamabad High Court had put a hold on a notification that proposed a decrease in the price of roti and naan in the federal capital. This suspension was to last until May 6, with the court seeking a comprehensive response from the concerned parties at the next hearing.
The decision was made during a hearing chaired by Justice Tariq Mahmood Jahangiri. The hearing was in response to a petition from the Naanbai Welfare Association, which raised questions about the legality and jurisdiction of the notification. The petitioner contended that the control of federal pricing was under the purview of the prime minister.
