Karachi is stepping up action against fake number plates in Karachi with advanced surveillance under the Safe City Project. DIG Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah explained on the ARY Podcast that the new system flags vehicles whose registration details do not match their physical appearance.
Authorities recently stopped a vehicle with black-tinted windows. Its number plate did not match any record. Checks showed the plate belonged to an FX but was installed on a Vigo. The system detected this on the spot.
Smart surveillance vehicles are now deployed at major intersections. Cameras provide real-time alerts to police on suspicious vehicles. According to DIG Shah, these alerts allow officers to intercept offenders immediately.
The Safe City Project aims to monitor traffic continuously. The new setup replaces older manual and non-IP-based systems. Stolen and snatched vehicles will now be easier to trace. Authorities expect higher recovery rates and safer roads across Karachi.
DIG Shah emphasized the scale of the project. Karachi needs around 24,000 cameras for full coverage. Visible improvements, he said, will encourage public support and further government investment.
Once fully operational, the upgraded system will play a key role in combating street crimes. The focus on fake number plates in Karachi and real-time monitoring under the Safe City Project represents a major step in modernizing law enforcement.
