In a major development unfolding today, the federal cabinet cleared the Federal Constitutional Court Act 2025 along with key amendments in the Pakistan Army laws. The cabinet moved fast under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and aligned the defence laws with the 27th Constitutional Amendment.
The National Assembly passed the Pakistan Army Amendment Bill 2025, Pakistan Air Force Amendment Bill 2025, and Pakistan Navy Amendment Bill 2025. The opposition resisted the move, but the bills went through without delay.
Under the updated Pakistan Army Act, General Asim Munir gets a fresh notification as the Chief of Defence Forces. The tenure for this position will be five years, counted from the date of appointment. The Prime Minister will appoint the Commander of the National Strategic Command based on his recommendation. The commander’s term remains three years with a chance of reappointment.
During the session, the law minister explained that the post of Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee will end on 27 November. The current chairman will continue until retirement. The new act also places the restructuring of all army branches under the Chief of Defence Forces. This is where both Pakistan Army reforms and General Asim Munir’s new authority come together.
