India has formally notified Pakistan of a potential significant flood under the Indus Waters Treaty Pakistan system. According to government sources, the Indian High Commission in Islamabad contacted Pakistan at 10:00 AM on August 24 regarding a potential flood in the Tawi River at Jammu.
India Pakistan Indus Water Treaty Update
The contact was made through formal diplomatic channels despite the Indus Water Treaty suspension announced by India in April 2025 following the India Pakistan war 2025. Officials confirmed this is the first major technical communication since the conflict.
After receiving the alert, Pakistan issued warnings to the NDMA, irrigation departments, and military engineering units. The information is being used for precautionary measures in potentially affected regions.
What is Indus Water Treaty?
The India Pakistan Indus Water Treaty, signed in 1960, obligates both countries to exchange river flow data and share flood-related information. India suspended participation earlier this year but has now shared this information as an exception. Analysts view this as a significant communication despite the treaty’s suspended status.
Authorities in Pakistan confirmed that flood preparedness measures are being reviewed in light of the advance information. The communication highlights the continuing importance of the Indus Water Treaty Pakistan for river data sharing even after the recent suspension.
