Islamabad is set to revolutionize its public transport system with the introduction of a new electric bus service. The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has announced that 30 electric buses will begin operations on two key routes this week. Route Details
The electric buses will initially operate on two routes:
- NUST to PIMS: This route covers approximately 13 kilometers and includes 13 stops. Buses will arrive at each stop every 10 minutes, ensuring a timely and convenient service for passengers.
- PIMS to Bari Imam: This route passes through several major locations, including G-7, G-6, Melody, Aabpara, Ataturk Road, Serena Hotel, the Foreign Office, Radio Pakistan, and the Diplomatic Enclave.
Expansion Plans
The introduction of these 30 buses is just the beginning. These buses are part of a larger fleet of 200 electric buses that will gradually be rolled out. Of these, 70 buses are expected to arrive from Karachi and 60 from China. The CDA plans to operate these buses on 11 different routes, connecting both rural and urban areas of Islamabad.
Operational and Ownership Details
The electric buses are owned by the National Radio and Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC), a subsidiary of the Ministry of Defence. The CDA will pay a fare of 306 to 331 rupees per kilometer and will provide the necessary logistical support to the contractor.
Infrastructure Developments
To support the new electric bus service, the CDA has installed a charging station with six charging points at the Convention Centre. Additionally, another facility is being established at the H-9 Metro Depot for the 70 buses arriving from Karachi. The CDA is also constructing bus depots at Zero Point, I-9, and Tramari to ensure the smooth operation and maintenance of the fleet.
