Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri Degree Dispute Intensifies in Islamabad High Court

Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri is a judge of the Islamabad High Court who is serving and is involved in a court battle on whether his law degree is valid or not. By December 10, 2025, the petition challenging his credential has been submitted to the IHC, and a reply to the judge and the concerned authorities is to be provided within 3 days.
Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri’s Background
Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri was born on July 10, 1965, in Mansehra, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He attended the Islamabad Model College, Gordon College and Federal Government Post Graduate College. In 1992, he got his degree of law at the University of Karachi (KU) and became a member of the Islamabad Bar Association. He then started Jahangiri Law Associates.
On December 28, 2020, President Arif Alvi appointed him one of the Justices of the Islamabad High Court. He has also worked as President of Islamabad High Court Bar Association (2016-2017) and was also involved in key judicial events such as a 2024 letter to the Supreme Judicial Council regarding ISI interference.
Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri Degree Controversy
The matter at hand involves the law degree of Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri which is awarded by KU. An application claiming a writ of quo warranto accuses discrepancies in his LLB qualifications. KU and Higher Education Commission (HEC) investigation revealed several identities and different enrollment records. Although KU had previously revoked the degree, it did not refer to it as bogus.
IHC and Supreme Court Actions
On September 16, 2025, the IHC barred Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri from judicial work pending SJC review. He appealed it to the Supreme Court where he was allowed to resume on a limited basis. Sindh High Court also stayed the cancellation by KU until November 27, 2025.
On December 10, 2025 the IHC has decided that the petition challenging the degree as maintainable of Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri and respectively requesting all parties to respond within three days.
The next stage in the case will be submissions made by Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri and other respondents. According to the legal experts, the result may be a significant precedent of the juridical qualification and authority.
