K-Electric has announced another increase in electricity tariffs, effective November, further adding to the burden on consumers already grappling with high energy costs. The utility provider revealed a rate adjustment of Rs2.17 per kilowatt-hour, pushing the total per-unit charge to Rs4.91 when combined with the current rate of Rs3.17 per kilowatt-hour.
In addition, a quarterly adjustment of Rs1.74 per kilowatt-hour will be applied separately in upcoming electricity bills, as part of the tariff adjustment mechanism designed to account for changing fuel prices.
This latest hike comes shortly after a similar increase of Rs2.59 per kilowatt-hour was introduced in October, sparking concerns about the rising financial strain on households and businesses. Adding to this, K-Electric is awaiting approval for an additional Rs0.51 per kilowatt-hour adjustment for August, which may further elevate costs.
The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) plays a key role in approving these adjustments, which are tied to monthly and quarterly fuel cost variations. In October, NEPRA allowed a provisional Rs3.03 per kilowatt-hour adjustment for July, set to reflect in December 2024 bills.
These charges stem from fluctuating global fuel prices and shifts in power generation methods, costs that are ultimately passed on to consumers. However, NEPRA also accounts for potential reductions when global prices drop.
The new tariff structure applies to all consumer categories except lifeline users, prepaid metering customers, and Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (EVCS). With back-to-back hikes, many Karachi residents are bracing for tougher times ahead, questioning how much more they can endure as energy costs continue to soar.
