K Electric Charges Increased: Residents to Pay 10 Rs Per Unit

Residents of Karachi are set to face higher electricity bills in the coming months as the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has announced a significant price hike in electricity rates. The notification, effective from June to September, will see the cost per unit rise to 9.98 rupees, up from the previous rate.

NEPRA’s decision to increase electricity prices is attributed to a monthly fuel adjustment for the next nine months. This adjustment will impact consumers starting from June, with additional charges per unit progressively increasing until September.

According to the notification, consumers in Karachi will bear extra costs as follows:

  • June: An additional 2.67 rupees per unit
  • July: An additional 3.10 rupees per unit
  • August: An additional 3.22 rupees per unit
  • September: An additional 99 paisas per unit

However, it’s important to note that these increased rates will not affect lifeline consumers of K-Electric, providing some relief to low-income households.

K-Electric had previously requested this tariff adjustment, covering the period from October 2023 to March 2024. NEPRA’s recent notification confirms the approval and implementation of this increase, impacting millions of electricity consumers in Karachi.

This rise in electricity prices underscores the ongoing challenges faced by residents in managing their monthly expenses. As consumers prepare for higher utility bills, the exclusion of lifeline consumers aims to alleviate some financial burden amidst these economic changes.
