K-Electric Tariff Increased by Rs 5.75 per Unit: NEPRA’s Latest Decision

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved a significant increase in the electricity tariff for K-Electric (KE) consumers, resulting in a hike of Rs5.75 per unit. This decision made following KE’s request for a fuel cost adjustment (FCA) for the months of May and June 2024.

Details of the Tariff Increase

According to NEPRA’s notification, the electricity price for KE consumers will increase by Rs2.59 per unit for May’s fuel adjustment and Rs3.17 per unit for June’s fuel adjustment. This hike will reflected in the electricity bills for October and November 2024.

Impact on Karachi Consumers

The increase expected to place an additional financial burden on Karachi’s residents, with the total impact estimated to be over Rs10 billion. Consumers in Karachi, who rely on KE for their electricity needs, will have to brace themselves for higher electricity bills in the coming months.

NEPRA’s Hearing and Decision

NEPRA conducted a hearing on KE’s request for provisional monthly FCAs on July 30, 2024. After thorough scrutiny, the regulatory authority issued its decision, approving the adjustments at PKR 2.53 and PKR 2.92 per kWh for May and June 2024, respectively.

The hike in electricity tariff for K-Electric consumers highlights the ongoing challenges faced by residents of Karachi. As the fuel cost adjustments take effect, consumers will need to plan for the increased costs in their upcoming electricity bills.
