K-Electric to Disconnect Power to Sindh Govt. Offices Over Unpaid Dues

K-Electric has issued a stark warning to cut off electricity to several Sindh government departments due to unpaid dues totaling billions of rupees. According to insider sources, the Government of Sindh and the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) have not made any payments to K-Electric since January.

Financial Crisis Looms for K-Electric

The non-payment has triggered a financial crisis for K-Electric, hampering its ability to maintain the power network. In response, K-Electric sent urgent letters to key officials, including the Sindh Secretary of Finance and the Mayor of Karachi, demanding immediate payment of the outstanding bills. In May alone, K-Electric issued five reminder letters seeking prompt settlement of dues.

KWSB alone owes K-Electric a staggering 5 billion rupees. K-Electric has warned that failure to settle these payments could lead to network failures and prolonged power outages in Karachi.

In a bid to address the power crisis, K-Electric and the Sindh government decided to form a joint committee in Karachi. High-level discussions took place today between representatives of both parties. The Sindh Government was represented by Energy Minister Nasir Hussain Shah, while K-Electric’s delegation was led by CEO Moonis Alvi.

During the meeting, it was agreed to form a joint committee comprising representatives from both the Sindh Government and K-Electric. This committee will work on addressing public grievances, ensuring timely bill payments, and developing strategies to minimize load shedding and guarantee an uninterrupted power supply in the city.

K-Electric’s CEO, Moonis Alvi, reiterated the company’s commitment to cooperate fully with Karachi residents during the heatwave. However, he emphasized that uninterrupted power supply is contingent on the timely payment of electricity bills.
