In a significant move to streamline city traffic, Karachi’s top brass, led by Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi, convened a high-level meeting. The agenda? To address the city’s burgeoning traffic issues head-on.
Relocating Bus Stops in Karachi
The meeting, attended by key stakeholders including Secretary Transport Asad Zaman and DIG Traffic, highlighted the plight of citizens grappling with traffic congestion due to bus stops in busy city areas. The solution? Relocate intercity bus stops to the city outskirts, thereby easing the traffic pressure within the city.
Daytime Ban on Heavy Traffic in Karachi
Another major decision taken was the strict enforcement of a daytime ban on heavy traffic. This move expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion, making commuting a breeze for Karachi’s residents.
The meeting also focused on identifying and overcoming obstacles, including encroachments, in the implementation of approved projects for intercity bus terminals. Various locations outside the city, including the superhighway, identified as potential sites for these terminals.
Secretary Transport Asad Zaman briefed the attendees on the Sindh Government’s approved project of bus terminals. He assured that the government committed to implementing these initiatives effectively. DIG Traffic reiterated that the ban on heavy traffic from 6 am to 11 pm will be strictly enforced.
The meeting acknowledged the challenges posed by illegal bus stops at various locations, including Taj Complex and Qayyumabad. It was decided that the Traffic Engineering Bureau will mobilized to improve the city’s traffic system.
The Traffic Engineering Bureau and Traffic Police directed to collaborate to address the shortage of traffic signals and lane marking. The meeting also proposed that the government allocate funds from its traffic fine income to complete the expenditures of traffic signals, road lane marking, and traffic signs.
