Karachi is once again facing a severe heatwave, with temperatures soaring to 41 degrees Celsius, leading to a significant increase in heat-related illnesses. Over the past four days, more than 70 individuals have been admitted to Civil and Jinnah Hospitals due to the extreme heat.
Heatwave Impact on Residents
The ongoing heatwave has taken a toll on the residents of Karachi, particularly affecting the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions. Civil Hospital has reported that 67 heat-affected individuals were brought to their emergency department. Dr. Nizam, AMS at Civil Hospital, mentioned that while most patients were discharged after their condition stabilized, three individuals required hospital admission. Fortunately, none of the cases were classified as heatstroke.
Jinnah Hospital has also been dealing with the heatwave’s impact, with 12 patients admitted over the last four days and three brought in today alone. The Emergency Incharge at Jinnah Hospital confirmed that their heatstroke ward is fully operational to manage the influx of patients.
Weather Forecast and Precautions
Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfaraz has warned that Karachi will continue to experience a partial heatwave for the next two days. The shift in wind patterns has exacerbated the heat, making it feel even hotter. However, relief is on the horizon as temperatures are expected to decrease after two days. Additionally, the monsoon season is anticipated to begin in the first week of July, which should bring much-needed respite from the scorching heat.
Stay Safe During the Heatwave
Residents are advised to take necessary precautions during this heatwave:
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
- Avoid Direct Sunlight: Stay indoors during peak heat hours (10 AM to 4 PM).
- Wear Light Clothing: Opt for lightweight, loose-fitting clothes.
- Use Fans and Air Conditioners: Keep your living space cool.
- Check on Vulnerable Individuals: Ensure elderly and sick family members are safe and comfortable.
As Karachi battles this intense heatwave, it is crucial for everyone to stay vigilant and take care of their health. Keep an eye on weather updates and follow the recommended guidelines to stay safe during this challenging time.
