In Karachi, traders and the business community have decided to close markets to protest against high electricity bills. Faheem Noori of the All Sadr Alliance of Market and Mall Association announced that markets would shut down from 12 PM to 3 PM. He warned that if the situation doesn’t improve, protests will escalate to include demonstrations outside the markets after a week.
This decision came after an earlier announcement by the same association to close Sadr markets in response to rising electricity and capacity charges. Traders are planning an emergency meeting on Friday to discuss further actions regarding the high electricity tariffs. Noori highlighted that the current electricity rates are too high for businesses to sustain. He urged the government to lower the electricity tariffs to alleviate the financial burden on traders.
The business community sees the closure as a significant move to draw attention to their struggles with inflated electricity bills. The rising costs have made it challenging for businesses to operate, prompting this drastic measure. The traders hope that their protest will reduce electricity tariffs, allowing them to continue their operations without such heavy financial strain.
