Karachi Rain Updates, Braces for Heavy Rainfall on April 18: Safety Measures Urged

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has sounded the alarm, predicting a significant downpour in Karachi commencing from April 18. The impending heavy rainfall is expected to impact several key areas of the city, including Surjani Town, Baldia, Liaquatabad, Orangi Town, Kiamari, DHA, Saddar, and Clifton, primarily in the western, northwestern, and southern sectors.

As the city currently experiences a temperature of 33 degrees Celsius coupled with 80 percent humidity, these conditions are anticipated to shift to 60 percent humidity by evening. An approaching western winds system, previously active in Balochistan, is slated to enter Karachi tonight. This weather event brings the potential for thunderstorms, along with gusty winds.

The influence of this weather system extends beyond Karachi, affecting neighboring regions of Sindh and Balochistan. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a precautionary alert, especially concerning river flooding in Balochistan due to the incoming winds triggering rainfall, notably in areas like Gwadar.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), recent heavy rainfall has resulted in unfortunate incidents, with 32 reported deaths including 15 children and 5 women. Additionally, 41 individuals sustained injuries, including 6 women, 28 men, and 7 children.

The impact of heavy rainfall is also felt in border areas like Taftan, Nok Kundi, and Dalbandin along the Pakistan-Iran and Pakistan-Afghanistan borders. Gwadar, facing a combination of intense winds and torrential rainfall, is witnessing submerged low-lying areas, raising concerns about potential damage to boats and infrastructure.

Furthermore, precipitation has been recorded in various other regions such as Quetta, Kech, Awaran, Chagai, Khuzdar, Pasni, Mardan, Lasbela, Qalat, Noshki, Jhal Magsi, Nasirabad, Sabi, Kohlu, Dera Bugti, Loralai, Harnai, Ziarat, Chaman, and Qila Saifullah.

Karachi Rain Safety Guidelines:

As safety remains paramount during such weather events, residents are urged to follow these safety guidelines:

  1. Stay Informed: Keep track of weather updates and alerts from reliable sources such as the PMD and local authorities.
  2. Prepare Emergency Kit: Have a stocked emergency kit with essentials like food, water, medicines, flashlights, and batteries.
  3. Avoid Flooded Areas: Steer clear of flooded streets, especially while driving or walking, to avoid accidents and injuries.
  4. Secure Property: Secure loose objects, outdoor furniture, and vehicles to prevent damage from strong winds.
  5. Stay Indoors: During thunderstorms, remain indoors and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities.
  6. Check on Vulnerable Individuals: Regularly check on elderly family members, children, and neighbors to ensure their safety.

By staying vigilant and adhering to safety precautions, residents can mitigate risks and stay safe during the anticipated heavy rainfall period.”
