Karachi Red Bus Fare Increased: Sindh Govt Increases Fares by Up to 60%

The Sindh government has approved an increase of up to 60% in fares for the People’s Bus Service (PBS), effective from February 1, 2025. The decision was made to accommodate rising operational costs following route extensions. The National Radio & Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC), responsible for managing PBS, has implemented the revised fare structure across various routes.

New PBS Fare Structure

According to an official announcement, the revised fares have been raised by 20% to 60% across different routes. The new rates are now displayed on the buses to inform passengers before the changes take effect. Currently, PBS fares range from Rs50 to Rs100, depending on the travel distance. The fare hike is expected to impact daily commuters, including office workers and students who rely on the service.

Sindh Govt to Introduce 8,000 E-Buses

In addition to the fare revision, the Sindh government has announced a plan to induct 8,000 electric buses (e-buses) into the PBS fleet over the next four years. The first phase, set for completion in 2025, will introduce 1,500 e-buses to improve urban mobility and reduce environmental impact.

The decision was made during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah. The National Energy and Transport Corporation (NETC), a subsidiary of the Ministry of Defense Production’s NRTC, has outlined a phased implementation plan. Currently, 50 e-buses are operational, and an additional 1,500 will be added in the first year.

The fare increase and expansion of the PBS fleet reflect the government’s efforts to modernize public transport while addressing financial sustainability. Commuters are encouraged to stay updated on fare adjustments and the upcoming introduction of electric buses in Sindh.
