Karachi is once again in the grip of a water crisis as a major power breakdown at the Dhabeji Pumping Station has brought water supply to a halt. According to the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC), pumping operations at Dhabeji have completely stopped due to the electricity issue. As a result, water supply to several areas across the city has been suspended, leaving residents struggling to manage their daily needs.
Efforts are being made to restore power at the pumping station and resume water distribution as soon as possible. Meanwhile, KWSC has urged citizens to conserve water and avoid wastage during this challenging time. Officials fear the crisis could lead to a shortage in nearly 80 to 90 percent of the city, affecting millions of people.
The disruption has also triggered a surge in demand for water tankers, with private suppliers charging hefty prices to deliver water to homes. For many, relying on these tankers is the only option, but the cost is unaffordable for a large number of families.
This is not the first time Karachi has faced such an issue. Just last month, the city suffered a six-day water outage after a pipeline at the Dhabeji Pumping Station developed a major leak. These recurring problems highlight the fragile state of Karachi’s water infrastructure and the urgent need for long-term solutions to avoid similar situations in the future.
