In a significant development, the Caretaker Sindh Chief Minister, Justice (Retd) Maqbool Baqar, has unveiled a plan to transform and beautify Karachi’s main arteries, with the aim of enhancing the city’s overall image. The initiative seeks to make the access points to Karachi more appealing, ensuring that visitors arriving at Jinnah Terminal greeted with a positive first impression.
Justice Baqar expressed his concern about the current state of the road leading from Jinnah Terminal, which he described as dirty and unattractive. To address this issue, he has laid out a comprehensive plan for the beautification of Shahrah-e-Faisal in its initial phase.
This announcement came during a joint meeting involving key stakeholders, including the Karachi Development Authority (KDA), Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), and prominent architects from the city. Justice Baqar sought their expertise and advice on how best to execute this ambitious project.
The meeting attended by notable figures, including Secretary of Local Government Manzoor Shaikh, Commissioner Karachi Saleem Rajput, DG KDA Tahir Sangi, and architects such as Ali Naqvi, Yawar Jilani, Adil Kiraie, and Hafiz Habib.
DG KDA Tahir Sangi highlighted the environmental aspects of the project, emphasizing the need for both hard and soft landscaping. This entails improvements to tree profiles, walkways, pedestrian areas, and pedestrian bridges. The project also encompasses enhancing street furniture, signage schemes, the regulation of billboards in terms of size and quality, street lamps, and the incorporation of artwork that reflects Karachi’s urban character. Additionally, monuments, fountains, and water features will integrated to enhance the area’s aesthetic appeal.
Justice Baqar, in collaboration with the architects, made the decision to improve all areas, focusing on flyovers, overhead pedestrian bridges, and various neglected sections of the road. Furthermore, it agreed to prioritize the enhancement of significant sites that offer views of unsightly and undesirable built structures, particularly along the initial stretch of Shahrah-e-Faisal for airport visitors.
In the first phase of this ambitious project, the area extending from Falaknaz Apartment to Drigh Road will undergo beautification. Subsequently, efforts will extended to enhance the remaining areas, ultimately revamping the entire cityscape and providing a more welcoming and aesthetically pleasing environment for residents and visitors alike.
This initiative by Justice Maqbool Baqar reflects a commitment to improving Karachi’s urban landscape and promoting a positive image of the city for all. It is a crucial step towards a more vibrant and attractive metropolis.
