ISLAMABAD: Former premier Khaqan Abbasi appealed against rejection of his nomination papers from NA-53 Islamabad, today.
During the scrutiny of nomination papers of the former PM Khaqan Abbasi, the RO rejected his candidacy from NA-53 Islamabad. The returning officer (RO) dismissed his papers over failure to fill out the affidavit properly.
According to the order of Supreme Court, nomination papers must be submit with an affidavit from the candidates. The affidavit will contain all the details of the candidate including asset details and work done in previous constituency.
PML-N leader Khaqan Abbasi had failed to mention what development work had he done during his previous term. Along with him, the RO had also dismissed Imran Khan, PML-N Leader Mehtab Abbasi and Ayesha Gulalai’s candidacy. All of which were also dismissed on similar grounds from the same constituency, NA-53 Islamabad.
Imran Khan has already filed an appeal over the rejection of his candidacy from the constituency. The hearing of his appeal is to resume today.
During yesterday’s hearing, Babar Awan, who was the legal counsel for Imran stated that RO dismissed his client’s nomination on unfair grounds.
Tariq Mahmood Abbasi filed the former PM’s appeal and stated that he did not intentionally leave out the section N of the affidavit. He told the court that it was a mistake and the former premier is willing to rectify it.
According to the schedule issued by the ECP for electoral process, today is the last day to file appeals against rejection and acceptance of nominations. After which the courts are to decide on the petitions by 27th of June.
The general elections are scheduled to be conducted on 25th of July.
